Abstract:
Report on a geophysical survey, evaluation and excavation carried out in advance of quarrying in 2002 on part of the Iron Age Hillfort at Hamdon or Ham Hill, Montacute, Somerset. Evidence of Iron Age activity consisted of twenty-one pits and a small number of other features. Ceramics suggest a date range of the fourth to first centuries BC. As well as pottery, material from the pits included fired clay, rotary querns or quern fragments, possible slingstones, whetstones, an antler comb, five iron objects (including a sickle and billhook, animal bones (including a number of horse heads), and charred plant remains including grain and mustard. Neolithic or Bronze Age worked flint and chert and Romano-British pottery were also found. Separately authored contributions include
