Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
The article looks at the characteristics of monasticism in the late-seventh or early-eighth century, at the time when Muchelney Abbey was founded, and in particular the role played by islands, whether coastal, riverine or in marshes or fenlands. It is pointed out that the early medieval landscape around Muchelney would have featured an archipelago of freshwater islands, and the place-names associated with these erstwhile islands are discussed, as is their context in relation to local estates and their `caputs' or head settlements during the Saxon period. | ||||
