Abstract:
Reviews the archaeological and architectural evidence for the seven effigies, suggesting that they were carved in two phases, separated by several decades, and that the first five date to c. 1180-84, contemporary with the earliest phase of the rebuilding of the cathedral church. Notes that the loss of the original architectural context of the effigies during the fourteenth century leads to some of the conclusions of the paper remaining speculative.
