Abstract:
Report on excavation of buildings within the friary complex. These were poorly preserved, and it is noted that interpretations are conjectural. The building orientation was unorthodox, and apparently dictated by the size and shape of the allotted precinct. The excavation recorded foundations, mostly robbed, of what are likely the main claustral complex, and several unidentified buildings. A later vertical-sided ditch is interpreted as part of a Civil War defensive work constructed during the siege of Bridgwater. Analysis of animal bones raises the possibility that horse and diseased cattle may have been eaten during the siege.
