Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Looks at the late-seventeenth- to early-nineteenth-century history of a rural townland in Co Clare. The townland changed ownership during the first half of the eighteenth century from the Gough family to that of the Butlers (ancestors of the nineteenth- and twentieth-century Lords Dunboyne). Relations between the Butlers and their tenants in this period were poor and were characterised by disputes over the payment of rents. Details of various tenants and their families are extracted from a variety of documents found among the papers of Lord Dunboyne, the tithe applotment books (1825) and from the local parish registers. Also reproduces the entries from a rental of Ballyvannon for 1832. | |||
