Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Begins by explaining the background to the early nineteenth-century explosion in the construction or embellishment of Church of Ireland parish churches in Ireland by the government-supported Board of First Fruits and the causes of its subsequent decline (including disestablishment in 1869, rural depopulation and the advent of the motor car). There follows a survey of the ten churches that were built with First Fruits funds in eastern Co Clare, of which only six still stand. Closes with a plea for the conservation (as opposed to the preservation) of those churches which cease, or have already ceased, to function as places of worship. | |||
