Abstract:		 Round-up of brief science news items, three of which are of archaeological interest: a report on the recent restoration of the nineteenth-century Great Telescope at Birr Castle (Co Offaly) (see also 97/1824--5); the commemoration of George Victor du Noyer (1817--69), an important early surveyor and artist of the Geological Survey of Ireland, with a plaque at All Saints Church, Antrim; and Mary Mulvihill (12) reports on the publication of two books on the Great Irish Famine following an exhibition and a commemorative lecture series held by Teagasc (the Irish Agriculture and Food Development Authority) on the theme in 1995. Although the exhibition is no longer open at its original venue (the Royal Dublin Society), it is available for loan.
