Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
General principles of palaeopathology with reference to Irish cases. Reports that the estimated stature of Irish populations over the last two thousand years has remained relatively unchanged. The article also shows how evidence of past medical care including the existence of surgery (trephination) and dentistry can be obtained by examining bones damaged through injury or disease processes. Fractures can indicate the level of violence in a past society and also show whether shoes were worn or not. The condition of teeth can demonstrate the level of dental hygiene of a past population. The value of palaeopathology extends to modern medicine by providing prehistoric evidence of a disease, and in helping to understand the process of diseases such as leprosy. Mentions that a range of scientific methods are increasingly used to gather more information. Includes `Computed tomography of archaeological remains' by Sam Hamilton (31) which briefly explains how CT scans are carried out and reports that bones from many Irish sites are currently being analysed by this method. | |||
