Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Discusses the advantages of cultivation ridges in bringing marginal land under cultivation, with particular reference to the rapid expansion of cultivated land in late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century Ireland, though the earliest examples in the country date to Neolithic times and survive today under areas of bog. Recent fieldwork in Co Fermanagh has also shown that there is much variation in the methods and dimensions of cultivation ridges, while a wide range of ridge-making spades was produced in spade mills of early-nineteenth-century Co Tyrone. | |||
