Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Excavation of a passage tomb beside the River Lingaun at Knockroe, Co Kilkenny, is providing new evidence that the passage tomb builders belonged to an international seafaring culture. Despite its isolation, the tomb at Knockroe (see also 96/301) has many close parallels to those on the Boyne valley in Co Meath, including ornamented kerbstones, alignment on the winter solstice, simple western/complex eastern chambers, and the placing of a distinctive stone at the western chamber's entrance. Knockroe also seems to have had a facade of quartz stones (which came from Co Wicklow or Lambay Island, Co Dublin) confirming the validity of the controversial reconstruction at Newgrange. The tomb builders may not have lived close to these monuments, but rather made pilgrimages to them from further afield. Calls for more fieldwork, especially along valleys and coastlines, before aerial pollution and weathering destroy the remaining sites. | ||||
