Abstract:
Reports the discovery by the Irish Underwater Archaeology Research Team of the foundations of what is allegedly the first stone bridge built by the Anglo-Normans in Ireland at Leixlip, Co Kildare. Most of the bridge (which dates from 1308 according to documents) had been demolished in the 1940s to make way for a hydro-electric power scheme. Though no physical evidence of a predecessor was found, it is possible that the stone bridge was preceded by a much earlier wooden one of the kind recently found at Clonmacnoise, Co Offaly (see 97/629).
