Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Reports are given on various events (mainly outings) held to mark the day at a number of mainly nineteenth-century AD mine sites around Ireland, including Avoca (Co Wicklow), Silvermines (Co Tipperary), Old Glengowla (Co Galway), Cappagh (Co Cork), Ballycummisk (Co Cork), Knockmahon (Co Waterford), and Ballycorus (Co Dublin), with a more detailed account of the history of the lead mines of Co Monaghan. While the mine buildings at Avoca were found to be under threat from development, a plaque to the memory of the miners was unveiled at Knockmahon. Also provides an account of a Mining History Society of Ireland meeting, including a report of a talk by Billy O'Brien on the excavation of prehistoric and later copper mines at Ross Island. | ||
