Abstract:
Excavations to the west of Avebury discovered the remains of a second megalithic avenue leading from the henge monument, and an unusual earthwork enclosure of probable Mid-Neolithic date. The existence of the second avenue had been mooted by the eighteenth-century antiquarian William Stukeley. Excavation revealed both buried stones and post-medieval stone destruction pits along its course, together with original stone sockets. Oval, and up to 140m in diameter, the enclosure predates the avenue. Consisting of a shallow, semi-segmented ditch broken by a wide entrance, it shares morphological similarities with the first phase of Stonehenge. The work was undertaken during the late summer of 1999 by the universities of Leicester, Wales College Newport, and Southampton.
