Abstract:
An archaeological and geological watching brief revealed that the gravel capping the hill was laid down by a former course of the River Avon during a periglacial episode. The fast flowing river incorporated soliflucted Chalk, which had sludged down the valley sides to form the banks carrying Palaeolithic handaxes with it. Much of the chalk in the gravel has been dissolved leaving a clay residue.
