Abstract:
The paper discusses some pellets carved on the chancel arch at Etchilhampton Church, which it is suggested may be depictions of the buboes (plague boils) of the Black Death. Comparison is made between these pellets and the medieval calvaires buboniques (plague crosses) found in southern Brittany showing the same form of embellishment. Etchilhampton was struck by the Black Death, although the Lord of the manor survived both it and the War of the Breton Succession. Wiltshire men fought in the Brittany campaign and this a link can be established with Etchilhampton during this period. It is also suggested that the pellets were part of a memorial chancel set up by John Malwain, Lord of Etchilhampton manor, on his return to England.
