Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Excavations at Old Wardour Castle have shown that the towers of the entrance front did not project further as the haphazard masonry of their N wall faces would seem to suggest. This can be accounted for by the 18th cent patching up of the front which was mutilated very badly during the engagements of the Civil War. An examination of the underground vaults to the south of the castle has shown that the medieval ground surface is some 8ft below the present ground level. It was in 16th cent that both vaults were built and the levels of the whole area were raised. A trench against the curtain wall itself showed that primary raising of levels took place in first half of 16th cent, exposing the probable weaknesses in the original medieval defences which were then rebuilt. While the exact purpose of this raising in levels is not clear, it is not thought significant that it precedes by only a few years the renovations of the castle carried out by Sir Mathew Arundell in the 1570s. The pottery runs from 12th/13th cents to 16th cent and beyond, with some imported wares (see also MPBW guide, 1968). Au | ||||||||
