Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
The building is substantially work of Aldhelm's period and may have begun as a martyrium/mausoleum. The box church plan with midwall porticus can be assigned to c 700. The ashlar fabric, doorways, chancel arch and the original form of the N porticus window fit this period. The uppermost stages cannot be later than the lowest since they have similar ashlar with matching tooling and quoin stones. Arguments against attributing to Aldhelm's period features like the Mercian hood, pilaster strips, square-cut imposts and blind arcading ignore the evidence for these details from pre-10th cent England and Continent. The pilasters of the ground stage, although not prepared for in the fabric, pre-date the double-splay window of the N porticus. An original function as a martyrium/mausoleum is suggested by the tower form of the church, the excluded sanctuary and the lack of windows in early nave and chancel. In addition, blind arcading is usual on continental martyria, and examination of its infrequent occurrences in England suggests a similar usage here. RNB | |||||||
