SU 117648; 193665. Excavation at Red Shore revealed evidence of "Celtic" fields succeeded by pasture before construction of the earthwork, which is here a one-period glacis bank, ditch and counterscarp bank. The causeway for the passage of the Ridgeway appears original. At New Buildings a partial section revealed a different, possibly later construction; and whereas the dyke near Shaw House cut across pre-existing estate bounds, nearer New Buildings it partly respected earlier boundaries. Dating cannot be put closer than AD 450-500 or 550-600; but the Dyke most likely functioned from AD 577-92, as a single defensive frontier, through Somerset and Wiltshire, erected by the Cerdicings against Ceawlin. Appended are pollen reports. Au(adp) | ||||
