Abstract:
Dates obtained from the Belfast and Groningen 14C laboratories fall generally between 1250 and 850 BC cal, with the ditch dated between 1170 and 990. The King's Stables (ritual pool) dates lie between 1190 and 1000 BC, but any overlap with Navan is less secure. Haughey's Fort appears to postdate the volcanic eruption of Hekla and may reinforce Scottish evidence for significant cultural changes at this time. Was the ritual pool constructed as a propitiatory act during climatic worsening, and was the rise of Navan a direct result?
