Abstract:
Examines the lexicographical evidence for the origins of an unpublished OE sermon, comparing it with the two texts preceding it in the ms -- an OE version of St Jerome's life of Malchus, and a translation of a letter by Boniface (Wynfrith), and concludes a Mercian origin. The appendix 'Evil Tongues' (217-29) gives a transcription and translation of the text.
