Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Report on the survey, recording and assessment of substantial timbers found projecting from the east bank of the River Severn to the north-east of Welshpool. The structure is described, and dendrochronological dating reported. The visible timbers were assumed to be part of an extensive structure which is likely to have reused timbers from an earlier structure. The results from the dendrochronological dating give dates of between AD 1087 and 1175 for the felling of the timbers; it is suggested that there might have been some connection with the nearby abbey of Strata Marcella. Although the timbers do not obviously belong to a mill, it is suggested that they may have been part of a sluice or 'shoot', or designed to prevent erosion. | |||||
