Abstract:
Small-scale excavations in 1978 and 2003 in a plot of land immediately to the north of Haverfordwest Castle revealed what appeared to be a substantial counterscarp bank to the defensive ditch of the castle. The bank probably dates to the late-thirteenth century and sealed a trackway, pits, post-holes and gullies of slightly earlier date. Other similarly dated features were located beneath deep topsoil away from the bank. Construction of the six houses now on the site was designed to ensure that these archaeological deposits were preserved.
