Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Report on an excavation carried out within the north-eastern corner of the middle bailey of Chepstow Castle, Monmouthshire, in 2003. Significant archaeological remains were revealed, associated with the late-twelfth- to fourteenth-century phases of construction. The discovery of wall foundations and associated gullies suggest that medieval structures survive in parts of the middle bailey. Metalworking residues suggest that smithing took place nearby, and domestic castle waste is indicated by animal bone, shell and pottery. The presence of this indicates that such waste may have been used to level out the ground within the bailey instead of being thrown into the adjacent River Wye.
