Abstract:
Excavations near Wye Bridge in Monmouth uncovered indications of a post-medieval `cinder mine', originally dug for the retrieval of iron-rich slag from Roman or medieval industrial activities, which became a profitable source of residual iron during the seventeenth and eighteenth century with the introduction of blast furnaces. The pit was later filled with material that included sherds of late-seventeenth and early-eighteenth pottery.
