Abstract:
In October 2013 the Early Mines Research Group (EMRG), working with the Royal Commission and a doctoral student from Aberystwyth University, undertook a trial excavation on the northern terrace of Castell Crogwynion Hillfort (SN 721725) to investigate a high lead/burning anomaly and low earthwork identified from pXRF surface sampling. The site was confirmed as a probable furnace following a Royal Commission funded geophysical survey in 2012. An alternative source for the lead anomaly was suggested in the form of lead-rich pottery glaze leaching out into the slightly acidic soil, but further analysis of lead isotopes indicated that the level of contamination could not have been completely derived from the pottery with readings being closer to the nearby mine. This suggested that the pollution may have been caused by post-medieval lead trials. Au/SH
