In response to a planning application, a small excavation was undertaken at the location of the site of a possible standing stone, known as the `Grey Stone'. Previous surveys of the site had described a number of stones in the area possibly comprising the remains of a megalith. A stone-filled socket, presumably for an orthostat, was uncovered beneath the field bank, however, no dating evidence was recovered. An investigation of the archive material in the SMR office uncovered the unpublished draft manuscript of A E P Collins' excavations at the nearby site of the `Grey Stone' also in Doon townland. The opportunity was taken to reproduce it here. | ||
