Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
During its survey of the north coast of Northern Ireland, the Centre for Maritime Archaeology identified five areas of archaeological remains at Grangemore Dunes, Co Derry, that were in the process of being eroded. The discovery prompted small-scale investigations, focused mainly on two of the sites, to examine the surviving archaeological features. In situ remains were examined at one site only, an Early Bronze Age stone setting, but macrobotanical analyses from buried soil horizons reveal two further episodes of human activity on the dunes in the medieval and late medieval periods. Pottery analysis of stray finds also indicates medieval and post-medieval activity at Grangemore. The results of the archaeological and palaeoenvironmental investigations demonstrate recurring activity on the dunes that spans three millennia. Includes | ||||||||||
