D 988897. A portion of a sword was dredged in 1947 from the NW corner of L Neagh. Most of the hilt and part of the blade remained, the grain of the handgrip being preserved in the products of corrosion. The blade was of lozenge section; the cocked hat hilt guard is paralleled in Ireland only at Lisnacrogher, but is well within the Continental La Tène II tradition, and a date of 2nd cent BC is suggested. The sword may have come from a crannog site, of which several formerly existed in the neighbourhood, and this provides a further parallel with Lisnacrogher. | |||||
