Abstract:
OS 6in Fermanagh sheet 27. The horn, dredged from the River Erne, has been restored by the British Museum and by Queen's University, Belfast. A piece of solid yew seems to have been split lengthwise into two halves which were channelled, shaped and rejoined to form a tube. The mouthpiece is of bronze, and twelve mounts of thin sheet bronze (three missing) were lapped round the horn for decoration. The rivets for (secondary) attachment were made of sheet bronze folded into tubular shape. A fret pattern with hatched triangles on one mount allows a fairly confident attribution to 8th-10th century, when horns were used in warfare and entertainment. A somewhat similar horn came from Becan (Co Mayo).
