Abstract:
Reviews the development of history and archaeology in the Cork region from the publication of Charles Smith's The Antient and Present State of the County of Cork (1750) to the founding of the Cork Historical and Archaeological Society in 1891. The work of a number of antiquarians is considered, notably that of Charles Smith MD (c 1715---1762), Abraham Abell (1783--1851), Fr Mathew Horgan (b 1775), George Petrie, John Windele (1801--1865), and Richard Bolt Brash (b 1817). The development and sequence of Cork antiquarian/intellectual societies of the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries is also treated.
