Abstract:
Report on a small excavation at the castle which was the traditional seat of the Sullivan Bere family and which was beseiged during the Nine Years War. Excavations carried out in 1967--73 revealed a late medieval tower house and bawn and a secondary curtain wall with triangular bastions probably built by a Spanish force which held the fort in the early-seventeenth century. A trial trench dug in 1989 showed that this wall was repaired (perhaps hurriedly) and that it interrupted the line of an earlier wall which probably formed part of a bastion. The Cromwellians later reused and enlarged the floor of the tower house in the construction of a star-shaped fort. Various aspects of the Renaissance-style fortifications and the problems in building them are discussed. Finds were dated mainly to the Cromwellian phase of the fort and are listed in an `Appendix: Finds from Dunboy 1989' (96).
