Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Describes a Latin cross-inscribed sandstone slab found on a beach in Roaringwater Bay, close to an old field wall now covered by water at high tide. The stone was probably used in the wall's construction and became dislodged during a storm. The findspot is near the townland boundary and is 1--1.5 miles from two early medieval churches. There are also many ringforts in the area, but no known archaeological sites exist close to the findspot. The slab is compared with similar examples from Counties Cork and Kerry, while specific features are compared with others found in Ireland and in Wales. Such slabs may date to between the sixth and tenth centuries and could have had a variety of functions including gravestones, boundary markers, or memorials to important events. | |||||||||
