Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Detailed report on the excavations of a pair of boulder burials at Cooradarrigan, near Schull, Co Cork, and of a boulder-burial associated with two standing stones at Ballycommane, near Durrus, Co Cork. Though no human remains were found beneath any of the boulder-burials, each boulder covered either a pit or a deposit containing charcoal and/or burnt clay which may represent the token deposition of cremated human body parts. Charcoal from the larger of the Cooradarrigan boulder burials produced a 14C date of 3080 ± 35 BP. Both sites show indications of a possibly ritual emphasis placed on one side of each boulder burial. The socket fill of both standing stones at Ballycommane contained no finds or secure charcoal contexts. However, one of the monoliths truncated an east-west (cultivation?) furrow, while a stone lined cist 0.23m to its north partly truncated the fill of its socket. There were no finds or human remains recovered, and the 14C date of 1230 ± 80~BP for the charcoal is considered to be anomalous. The relationship of the boulder-burial to the standing stones was not ascertained. Concludes with a discussion of boulder-burial morphology and function in the light of the excavation results and the evidence from the only other excavated boulder-burial at Bohonagh, Co Cork. | |||||||||||||||||
