Reports on the discovery (in 1995) of ten medieval fishtraps located on the mud flats of the Shannon. The sites were discovered during intertidal archaeological surveys carried out by the North Munster Project of the Discovery Programme. Each site was recorded by scale drawings and the taking of wood samples for wood-species identification, the analysis of woodworking technology and radiocarbon dating, while two excavation trenches were laid across one of the sites. The fishtraps apparently form the first archaeological evidence for early medieval settlement at Bunratty. | |||||||||
