Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
The account of an urban architectural survey carried out in 1992 by the Office of Public Works (Ireland) of Ennis, Co Clare. The use of documentary, cartographic and photographic evidence in addition to architectural field work in the survey is explained, while mention is made of some of the problems faced by the surveyors such as dating a structure which had been altered since its construction. Apart from their architectural interest, it is shown that buildings can have an historical value such as indicating a period of economic confidence in the town at the time they were built. The street pattern, street names, and the dating of individual buildings also chronicle changes in the town's layout and historical development. Concludes that Ennis needs to preserve those buildings which give both the town and its streets their distinctiveness. |
