Abstract:
Report on the excavation of part of the interior of an underground passage, to the north-east of Bunratty Castle, which is interpreted as a limestone and brick bridge. It is suggested that the passage may have been built as a drainage channel for the castle's moat which is thought to date to the mid-seventeenth century. The passage's fill contained an upper layer of modern debris with recently laid piping and a lower layer of waterlogged silt with modern deposits. The fragment of a window mullion was found in the upper layer and a single oval-shaped and water-rolled stone was retrieved from the bottom of the lower layer. Probing suggested the foundation of the structure to be at the level of the lower layer's base, but there was no evidence of a plinth. No stratified material was found which could date the bridge's construction, which may have occurred in the early-seventeenth century when the fourth Earl of Thomond embellished the castle with red brick vaulting similar to that of the bridge.
