Abstract:
The paper examines religious dedications to British and Gaulish deities in the epigraphy of Roman Britain, with the purpose of considering whether the inscriptions provide a largely Romanized view of the cults, because they were set up mainly by immigrants who often equated deities with Classical counterparts. The authors also consider whether epigraphic evidence might suggest that a considerable number of the devotees were Britons who retained their native traditions and culture but adopted the Roman habit of making literate dedications.
