SO 002297. The chronology suggested by Wheeler and Simpson needs some revision. The defences indicate major rebuilding in late 2nd cent and a second rebuilding (S gate only) probably in late 3rd cent, after the fort's military character was apparently abandoned. But the unusual siting of the commandant's house and headquarters building presents complications, perhaps demanded by Antonine military policies. Withdrawal of troops c AD 140 plus might explain a planned but unimplemented reduction in the size of the fort, and their return in mid-150s a further reorganisation, the enlarged commandant's house displacing the headquarters building from its normal position. Abandonment came in late 2nd or very early 3rd cent, when the headquarters well was filled in; but evidence for occupation in 3rd and 4th cents, though scanty (conversion of internal bath-house to living quarters, and some coins), may suggest intermittent use of the fort for police work.
