Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
The Aberystwyth palstave only came to archaeological notice (along with a gold Tara torc still undergoing detailed examination) via a sale catalogue. The view of earlier workers that palstaves of this rare type were imported from Iberia is unacceptable, since, apart from the possession of double loops, there is little resemblance between the Iberian and British types. The stout midrib of the Aberystwyth palstave is seen in several of the British examples; here the type belongs to late MBAIII, at about the turn of 2nd/1st millennia, and there is one association with a torc of Bishopsland type. The Iberian version on the other hand, belongs mainly to LBA and could well have developed as a result of British types among other NW European material reaching Iberia at that time. | |
