Derivation of the Iron Age (Durotrigian) ceramic tankard from the wood and metal (Belgic) version is unlikely. A brief upsurge of metalwork in Wales is attributed to craftsmen migrating ahead of the Roman invaders. The makers of pottery tankards also moved, first to the Severn Valley in the wake of the army, and later (early-mid 2nd century) to reach a more northerly market. | ||||||||||||||
