Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
The numerous battle references in the Anglo-Saxon and British sources are examined 'in order to establish the character of the warfare which accompanied the establishment of the kingdoms of Kent, Sussex and Wessex'. There are 28 battles recorded between 429 and 789, falling into four main types: initial landings of newcomers; those involving Roman defences; those in or near identifiable hillforts of pre-Roman construction; and those at river crossings. Eleven have no location at all, and Saxon Shore forts were involved, if ever, only in a later phase of penetration. There is no evidence that the hillforts mentioned in the sources had refurbished defences - and neither Badon nor Dyrham are necessarily to be related to actual hillforts, wherever sited. | ||||
