Abstract:
The first account of a hoard found in Sark in 1718, of which drawings done by G Vertue in 1725 are in the Society of Antiquaries. An iron-bound pot (possibly of NW French origin) contained a Roman Republican denarius, seventeen Gaulish silver coins (including Ateula Ulatos and Togirix) and fourteen silver-gilt ornaments (thirteen phalerae and a curved band) probably of Thracian origin, embossed with animals. It was buried c 40-30 BC. Au/Numis Lit. See also Erik Nylen in Tor, 12, 1967-8, 133-73 (Engl summary), discussing relations between Sark phalerae and Gundestrup cauldron.
