Salvage excavation of an isolated medieval pottery kiln, revealed during road construction, recovered the lower structure of an oval oven with two opposed flues. A substantial assemblage of medieval `South Hertfordshire Greyware', dated on external evidence to c. 1200--50, formed the fill of the kiln, although it did not represent the last firing.
