Report of work in the western part of the site. Neolithic features were found including a penannular group of nine pits or postholes, which predated and lay almost exactly beneath a similar structure from the Bronze Age settlement. This structure was one of a group of four which may have been roofed domestic buildings. Two of these structures were connected by a drain. Other features included a cobbled yard onto which three of the structures opened; a setting of four postholes connected by a narrow path to a similar setting beyond which was a penannular ring of nine pits or postholes (identified as a possible 'shrine'); and a cluster of eight pits. These pits contained Bronze Age pottery, and one contained several layers of ash. Another, slab-lined pit contained animal bone. Palaeobotanical remains indicate a range of crops. The cobbled yard extended eastwards into Site K, where a fifth round structure was found in 1997-99. Post-settlement features include the remains of a stone cairn overlying the 'shrine', incorporating a possible cist. | |||||||||||||||||
