Abstract: The author contests some of the claims made by B K Roberts and S Wrathmell in An atlas of rural settlement in England (London, 2000) and Region and place. A study of English rural settlement (London, 2002) with regard to the southern, coastal areas of Hampshire; the geology, history and settlement distributions of the areas on the east and west sides of the Solent are discussed, with reference to historical maps and to the maps produced by Roberts and Wrathmell.
