Archaeological investigations carried out prior to and during house construction, commencing in 2000, revealed settlement and funerary activity of many periods, including Late Bronze Age to Early Iron Age storage pits and structural evidence, well-furnished `Durotrigian' burials, a circular structure, which may be a Romano-British temple, and a small cemetery dating to around AD 700. The cartographic and other documentary evidence indicates that Portesham may have been the site of a Saxon Minster, and a large ditch identified at a number of locations close to the boundary of the site may represent the precinct boundary to the minster complex.
