SY 681690. Further work confirmed the stratigraphical findings of 1966. The predominant industry is Mesolithic, possibly of Boreal or even pre-Boreal date. A Late Palaeolithic element also appears. The occupants had formed simple shelters from time to time, possibly by stacking stone slabs. The mainstay of their diet was seashore mollusca; but experiments with "Portland picks" showed that these could uproot edible plants and roots, though only the larger picks could, if suitably hafted, be used for actual tilling. There are obvious differences from the Iwerne Minster and Farnham industries. Au(adp) | |||||
