Abstract:
SY 783812 etc. Chaldon Herring barrows 15, 16 and 18 were ploughed-down mounds on clay-with-flints. The ditches had been lined with flints as soakaways. Barrow B had a central four-post structure and Barrow A traces of a robbed cremation in an inverted bucket urn. A Deverel-Rimbury horizon is likely. Pre-barrow deposits contained Meso flint and chert industries, p-t-d arrowheads and Beaker sherds. Field-walking indicated that surface finds were confined to the immediate area of the barrows. Reports on the cremated remains, finds and soil are appended.
