Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
On the freestone effigy of a knight in the parish church at Hatfield Broad Oak, Essex, identified from the inscription as Sir Robert de Vere, Earl of Oxford, who died in 1221, although the date of the effigy is recognised to have been significantly later than this. The effigy is described in detail, and the figure's dress, especially the scabbard-fastening, are discussed. On the basis of this fastening, the author argues that the monument was produced during the early-fourteenth century, and the reasons for such a late date in relation to its subject are considered. | |||||
