Abstract:
Eight papers on the subject of Shropshire's prehistory begin with `A strategy for lowland Shropshire' by M O H Carver (1--8). This outlines plans for improving the efficiency of the Shropshire record including the need to expand the use of aerial, documentary and geophysical survey techniques. `Ring-ditches of the Upper Severn valley' by M D Watson (9-14) records the definition, geographical background, morphology, distribution, date, and function of what are thought to represent Bronze Age round barrows. There is a call for additional aerial reconnaissance to complete the record. `Excavations on Sharpstones Hill near Shrewsbury, 1965--71' by P A Barker, R Haldon & W E Jenks (15--57) reports the findings from five areas excavated at the site, including Neolithic and Beaker material, Bronze Age barrows and cremations, Iron Age farmsteads and field systems, Roman pottery and a possible hearth of post-Roman date. There is a pottery report, including a `Note on the urns from F10 and F22' by I H Longworth (36) along with a `Report on samian stamp of base fragment from F59' by B R Hartley (38--9). Four appendices provide `Report on cremated bone from site A' by R Powers (43--4), `Report on cremated bone from urn, F24, site B' by T F Spence (44), `Report on pollen sample from site C' by F W Shotton (44--5), and `Petrological report on the prehistoric ceramics from Sharpstones Hill' by E L Morris (45--8). `A note on the Berth' by E L Morris & P S Gelling (58--62) records the result of a small excavation in 1962--63 at the site of a univallate fort, causeway, and embanked enclosure. There are notes on the petrology of the ceramic material, the Iron Age pottery, the daub and fired clay, the Cheshire stony VCP assemblage, a possible bronze-working crucible, and the Romano-British pottery. `Excavations at Castle Farm, Shifnal, 1980' by Annette Row (63--83) covered an Iron Age cropmark enclosure, medieval moated site, and a post-medieval farm. There are two appendices, the first being a section on the ceramic evidence, including the `Roman pottery' by P M Booth (82), and `Prehistoric material' by E L Morris (82), and the second dealing with `Flints from Castle Farm, Shifnal' by L H Barfield (83). `Excavations at Rock Green, Ludlow, 1975' by M O H Carver & M R Hummler (84--97) produced Beaker evidence, along with a Romano-British rectilinear ditched enclosure. Finally, `An excavation at Wall Camp, Kynnersley' by Dermot Bond (98--105) produced evidence of an Iron Age enclosure and associated structures. There follows a `Report on the prehistoric ceramics found at Wall Camp, Kynnersley' by E L Morris (106--7). IH
